Summer 2025 News and Events at the Maurin Academy!

What Maurin Academy sessions can you be involved in soon?

It’s the middle of the Summer, and we’ve got some good things for you coming up, including talks centered on food, agriculture, and ecology. Our July TMA Lecture is on your choices at the grocery store, and our August TMA Lecture is on “nature, nurture and natality.” We also have a 2 part series on Native Plants in August and September.

More on these and other news below. If you like what we do, consider lending your support–and thank you to everyone who has!

July TMA Lecture: An Expert on Sustainable Agriculture Gives You Guidance at the Grocery Store and Beyond

Dr. Jeremy Cowan, a Horticulture specialist and homesteader, will speak on July 24 at 7 p.m, live on Zoom, and recorded. If you have been confused by the terms you see on foods and products at the grocery store, and wondered if how you eat or consume really impacts the environment, this talk is for you. Dr. Cowan will discuss how the commercial “sustainable” food and product choices we make may not be as sustainable as we think. How can we make better choices, either in the grocery store or in the garden.

You can join us for this and everything we do by supporting the Maurin Academy on Patreon at the Worker-Scholar level, or receive the video of his talk with the Question and Answer session included at our Salt of the Earth level. If you want to gain access to only this lecture, live and recorded, use this link!

Dave McKerracher from Theory Underground Joins us on August 12, TMA Lecture

On August 12, Theory Underground’s Dave McKerracher Will Speak on “Nature, Nurture and Natality,” from 7-8:30 live on Zoom and recorded. Dave and Ann have recently settled on their family farm, beginning a new era of their lives. We’re looking forward to Dave’s reflections in the midst of this transition. Ongoing Class on Ivan Illich–It’s Not Too Late to Join!

Our Ongoing Reading Groups: News

The Great Books Reading Group led by Laurie Johnson will be spending one more session on August 7 on Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum, an encyclical about the plight of the working class in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. The group will then pick their next read. Get in on this group and everything we offer on our Patreon.

On Saturday, July 19, at 4 p.m. US Central Time, the Communio Study Circle (mainly studying Ressourcement theology) will read the first chapter of Hans Urs Von Balthasar’s book Mysterium Paschale (The Mystery of Easter) https://ignatius.com/mysterium-paschale-mystp/. This is a new topic for the group, so now is a good time to join us!

Jakob Hanschu is taking a long overdue break, having finished a reading group on Horkheimer and Adorno’s The Dialectic of Enlightenment, but he’ll be back!

What We’re Reading…

Coming Up on Our Podcasts…

Dustbowl Diatribes: Spencer Hess and Laurie Johnson start a new season with a focus on the challenges facing Catholic Worker houses of hospitality and farms. Catholic Workers are on the forefront of battling poverty, homelessness, and helplessness. They come from any different backgrounds, Catholic and otherwise. Their experience is particularly important now, as we’re facing so many crises.

Political Philosophy: Laurie Johnson has started a series of episodes on novelist Jerzy Kosinski’s Being There, a satirical tale of the follies of media-saturated democracy.

Midnight Lands: Spencer Hess inaugurated an occasional theology podcast with this episode:

Dr. Matthew Dal Santo joined Spencer to discuss his Communio article (https://www.communio-icr.com/articles/print/a-theological-reading-of-the-russian-regime-sergei-bulgakov-and-the-theocra) on Russia’s political regime. They discussed some of the distinctions between being “sub-theocratic”, “post-theocratic”, and anti-theocratic, as well as how these categories intersect with genuine and degraded theologies.
